underpinnings の語源・成り立ち Etymology
underpinnings は under「下で」+ pin「留める」+ -ing から成り、古英語 pinn「木の留め具」にさかのぼります。もとは「下から杭で支えること」で、そこから建物や議論の「土台・基盤」を表す語になりました。関連語は pin。
Underpinnings is the plural of underpinning, a noun derived from the verb underpin. Underpin combines under with pin and originally referred to supporting a structure from below, especially by adding masonry or other reinforcement beneath it. Pin ultimately goes back through Old English pinn to a Germanic borrowing from Latin pinna. The physical sense later developed into the figurative meaning of principles or evidence that support an idea or system.
