underrated は、実際の価値や実力より低く評価されているという意味です。映画、人物、場所、能力などについて、もっと評価されるべきだと言いたいときに使います。
Someone or something described as underrated is generally judged, valued, or appreciated less highly than their actual quality or importance deserves. The word implies that a higher opinion or level of recognition would be more appropriate.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
under-「基準より下に」+ rated「評価された」で、「実力や価値より低く評価された」。an underrated singer のように名詞の前でも、The singer is underrated のように補語でも使う。overrated「過大評価された」と対にし、単に unpopular「人気がない」ではなく、本来もっと評価されるべきだという判断を含むと覚える。
Separate underrated into under- and rated: it has been rated below its true value. This does not simply mean “unpopular.” Calling a singer, museum, skill, or film underrated expresses the speaker’s judgment that it deserves more praise, attention, or recognition than it receives. Learn it together with its clear opposite, overrated, which means valued too highly. It works before a noun, as in “an underrated actor,” or after a linking verb, as in “This actor is underrated.” The internal word rated comes from the verb rate, meaning “to assess or rank.”

underrated の語源・成り立ち Etymology
under-(下に)+ rated(評価された)の複合語。rateはラテン語 rata(計算された)から来ており、pro rata(按分)と同根。「本来の価値より下に計算された」が直訳で、実力に見合う評価を受けていない意。関連語: overrated, ratio。
Underrated combines the English prefix under-, meaning “below” or “insufficiently,” with rated, the past participle of rate. Rate entered English through French from Medieval Latin rata, related to the idea of a calculated or fixed amount and ultimately to Latin reri, “to reckon.” The compound therefore literally suggests being assessed below the proper level and now describes insufficient recognition of quality, value, ability, or importance.
