unpaired は un-「〜でない」+ pair「対」+ -ed から成る語です。pair は古フランス語 paire、さらにラテン語 par「等しい・同じ」へさかのぼり、「同じものが二つそろう」感覚から「ペアになっていない」という意味になりました。関連語に parity, compare があります。
Unpaired is built from un-, pair, and -ed. Pair came through Old French from Latin par, meaning "equal," so a pair was originally two matching or equal things together.
