unplugged は un-「外す・打ち消す」+ plugged で、plug は中期オランダ語 plugge「栓」に由来します。もとは「穴をふさぐ栓」だった語が「差し込み部品」に広がり、plug や plugin と同根なので、「つないだものを外した」が原義です。
Unplugged is formed from the prefix un-, here expressing reversal or removal, and the past participle plugged. Plug is probably related to Middle Dutch plugge, meaning a stopper or peg. A word for something used to block an opening later developed the electrical sense of a connector inserted into a socket. The musical sense of unplugged arose from the image of disconnecting electronic amplification and performing acoustically.
