解説 Definition
風が吹いてくる方向へ、または風上の位置へ向かうことを表す副詞。煙やにおいを避けたり、船や人が風に向かって進んだりするときなど、移動や位置取りの向きを示すのに使う。
Upwind means in the direction from which the wind is blowing, or toward that direction. It is often used when talking about movement, position, smells, smoke, or outdoor activities.

upwind は up + wind で「風の来る側へ」と分解して覚えるのが最短です。単独で暗記するより、反対語 downwind（風下に）とセットにすると向きの感覚が固定されます。煙・におい・火・帆船の場面を結びつけると強く残り、stand upwind of the fire なら火の煙が来ない側に立つ、sail upwind なら風に向かって進む感じです。up は高さではなく“向かう側”だと意識すると、uphill などとの混同も防げます。

upwind は up「上手・向かう側」+ wind「風」から成る。wind は古英語 wind、さらに印欧祖語 *we-「吹く」に由来し、風が吹いて来る側へ上るイメージから、地形の上下ではなく「風上」を指す語になった。関連語は windy、windward。
