Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language used chiefly in Pakistan and northern India. It is Pakistan’s national language, is normally written in a Perso-Arabic script, and shares much of its everyday grammar and vocabulary with Hindi.

ウルドゥー語 urdū はトルコ語 ordu（軍営・陣営）に由来し、「陣営の言葉」を意味する。ムガル帝国の軍営でヒンディー語にペルシャ語・アラビア語が混ざって形成された。関連語: horde（大群、同じトルコ語源）。軍隊の共通語から一つの言語が生まれた歴史を反映する。
The name Urdu comes through Persian urdu from a Turkic word meaning “camp” or “army,” also related historically to English horde. It is shortened from a longer expression associated with the language of an imperial camp or court. The name reflects contact among speakers in the Mughal world, where local Indo-Aryan speech developed alongside strong Persian and Arabic cultural and lexical influence. Urdu itself remains grammatically Indo-Aryan.
