フランス語 horde を経て、ポーランド語 horda、さらにテュルク語系 ordu「陣営・軍隊」に由来します。もとは「軍の一団」の感覚で、そこから「大きな集団・大群」へ広がりました。関連語は Urdu。
Horde entered English through French horde, from Polish horda, and ultimately from a Turkic word such as ordu, meaning camp or army. It first suggested a military group or camp of people. Later, the meaning broadened to any large, moving crowd or mass; Urdu comes from the same root.
