付加価値税
noun 名詞通常は大文字で VAT と書き、商品やサービスの各取引段階で付加された価値に課される税を指す。英国などの税制度や価格表示で用いられ、vat の「大桶」とは語源も意味も異なる略語である。
液体を大量に入れ、醸造・染色・加工などに使う非常に大きな容器。主に工場や醸造所で用いられる。
A very large container used to hold or process a large amount of liquid. It is commonly found in breweries and factories for activities such as fermenting, mixing, or dyeing.
vat は、家庭の bucket(バケツ)や barrel(たる)よりはるかに大きく、工場や醸造所に据え付けられた液体用の「大桶」を思い浮かべると定着しやすい語です。人が抱えて運ぶ容器ではなく、果汁、ワイン、染料などを大量にため、発酵・混合・加工する設備に近いのがポイント。a large vat of juice(果汁の大桶)、wooden wine vats(木製のワイン大桶)、a dye vat(染色槽)をひとまとまりで覚えましょう。作業員が巨大な容器へ液体を注ぎ、長い棒でかき混ぜる工場の場面に固定すると、単なる「容器」と区別できます。
Picture a huge fixed container in a factory, filled with wine, juice, or dye. It is much larger than an ordinary bucket and is used as processing equipment rather than a container carried by hand.
The workers poured the juice into a large vat.
作業員たちは果汁を大きな桶に注いだ。
They keep the wine in huge wooden vats.
彼らはそのワインを巨大な木製の大桶に貯蔵している。
They mixed the dye in a metal vat.
彼らは金属製の大桶で染料を混ぜた。

vat は中英語の形を経て、古英語 fæt「容器・たる」に由来するゲルマン系の語です。南部方言で語頭 f が v になった形で、大きな液体容器を指すのは語源どおりです。関連語は Dutch vat, German Fass。
The word comes through Middle English from Old English fæt, meaning a container or barrel. Its initial sound changed from f to v in a southern dialect.
