英語における文字 V の名称 /viː/ を、発音が分かるよう vee と綴った語である。ee はここでは独立した接尾辞ではなく、長母音 /iː/ を示す綴りである。のちに、文字Vに似た形や隊形も表すようになった。
Vee is a written representation of the English name of the letter V. The spelling uses ee to show the long /iː/ sound heard in the letter-name. The letter itself developed from the Roman alphabet, in which one character served functions later divided between U and V. During the development of European writing and printing, U and V became established as separate letters. The noun vee then also acquired a shape-based sense for anything arranged like the pointed letter V.
