Whatnot is an informal word for various other things of a similar kind that are not named exactly. It is used when the full list is not important or is too long to give. The word is casual and common in spoken English.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず core は what。「何？」と挙げたあと、細かく言うのをやめてひとまとめにする雑な受け皿が whatnot です。感覚としては etc. や stuff に近いが、より口語的で「あれこれ、そのへん全部」という軽さがあると覚えると残りやすいです。books, tools, and whatnot のように、例を少し出した後ろに置かれやすく、きっちり分類しない場面で出る語だと押さえると使い分けしやすいです。
Break it into "what" plus a loose ending, and hear it as "what and other things like that." It works as a broad, non-specific word, but it sounds old-fashioned or informal compared with "anything." Remember it as a word you may meet in writing, not one you should use often yourself.
