Etymology
Whitechapel is a compound of white and chapel. White comes from Old English hwīt, while chapel entered English through Old French chapele from Late Latin cappella. Cappella originally meant a “little cloak” and became associated with a sanctuary housing a sacred cloak, after which it developed the meaning “small church.” The London place name referred to a white chapel or church in the area, traditionally identified with the medieval church that preceded St Mary Matfelon.
