wince は英仏語由来で、古北フランス語 *wenchier／古フランス語 guenchir「脇へそれる、避ける」を経て、さらにフランク語系のゲルマン語にさかのぼります。もとは「横へさっと逃れる」感覚で、痛みにひるんで身を引く意味となり、wink も同系です。
"Wince" came into English from Old Northern French and Old French forms like "guenchir," meaning "to turn aside" or "avoid." It goes back to a Germanic source, probably Frankish. The idea changed from moving quickly to one side to pulling back suddenly from pain or fear. "Wink" is thought to be related through the same old root.
