fossaはラテン語で「溝・掘られたくぼみ」を意味し、動詞fodere「掘る」から来ています。fossilも同根で本来は「掘り出されたもの」。体のfossaが「掘ってできたようなくぼみ」だと見ると、解剖学の名づけが覚えやすくなります。
