yule
Memory Tip
Use Yule when you want the traditional, old-fashioned atmosphere of Christmas rather than the neutral everyday word Christmas. Imagine a midwinter feast, a fire, and a large Yule log burning in the hearth. Two expressions make the word easy to retain: Yuletide means the Christmas season, and Yule log can mean either the ceremonial log once burned at Christmas or a log-shaped holiday cake. The word also carries the memory of pre-Christian Germanic midwinter celebrations that later became associated with Christian Christmas customs.

Etymology
古英語geōl(冬至の祝祭)から。 Yuletide(クリスマス期間)、yule log(クリスマスの薪)など関連語が残る。
Yule comes from Old English geol or geola, the name of a midwinter festival and season. It is cognate with Old Norse jol and related Germanic forms. The word referred to a pre-Christian winter celebration before its customs and name became associated with Christmas after the spread of Christianity in northern Europe. Modern English preserves it mainly in literary or traditional usage and in compounds such as Yuletide and Yule log.
