Memory Tip
U.S. とtheを付け、live in the U.S.やThe U.S. has fifty statesの形で使います。
Link the two letters to the full name: U stands for United and S for States. This recalls the basic idea of many states joined in one country. When U.S. is a noun naming the country, use the definite article: “the U.S.” Common patterns include “live in the U.S.” and “The U.S. has fifty states.” The form US without full stops and the longer abbreviation USA are also widely used. Notice that U.S. can also appear before a noun as an adjective, as in “U.S. law” or “the U.S. government.”
例文
My uncle lives in the U.S.
The U.S. has fifty states.

United States(連合した州々)の頭文字を取った名前です。
U.S. is an initialism made from the first letters of United States, itself the central part of the official name United States of America. United expresses the joining of the states into one federal country, while States names its constituent political units. The abbreviation has long been used in English with full stops, although US is now also common. USA or U.S.A. includes the additional initial of America.
