accretion を覚えるポイント・使い方
accretion は、物質が少しずつ付着・堆積して、物体や塊が大きくなる過程。砂や鉱物が積み重なり、層や塊が育っていくイメージで覚えます。
この過程を表すときは通常、不可算名詞として使います。the accretion of dust のように、of の後に付着・集積する物質を置けます。
Slow accretion of minerals formed a hard layer on the pipe.
鉱物がゆっくり付着して、管の表面に硬い層ができました。

解説 Definition
物質が少しずつ付着・堆積し、物体や塊が大きくなる過程。鉱物の層、砂の堆積、塵やガスからの天体形成などに使われます。
Accretion is the gradual process by which material collects, attaches, or builds up, causing an object or mass to grow. The term is often used for deposits of minerals, the accumulation of sand, and the formation of astronomical bodies from dust or gas.

使い分け Common distinctions
- addition は一般的な追加。accretion は物質が繰り返し付着・蓄積して大きくなる過程を表し、自然な堆積によく使います。 Addition means adding something generally. Accretion describes growth through repeated attachment or accumulation of material, often in natural processes.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
accrete「付着・堆積して大きくなる」と結びつけ、塵・砂・鉱物が少しずつ加わって層や塊が育つ様子を思い浮かべます。
Connect accretion with accrete. Picture dust, sand, or minerals gradually gathering to form a larger mass or layer.
例文
The scientist studied the accretion of dust around the young star.
その科学者は若い星の周りで起こる塵の集積を研究しました。
Slow accretion of minerals formed a hard layer on the pipe.
鉱物がゆっくり付着して、管の表面に硬い層ができました。
The island grew through the accretion of sand over many years.
その島は長年にわたる砂の堆積によって大きくなりました。

accretion の語源・成り立ち Etymology
accretion はラテン語 accretio「増大・付加」に由来し、ad-「〜へ」+ crescere「成長する」から成ります。もともとは「何かにくっついて大きくなる」感覚で、そこから「付着・堆積」の意味になりました。関連語は increase、crescent。
Accretion comes through Latin accretio, meaning growth or increase, from accrescere, “to grow larger.” That verb combines ad-, “toward or in addition,” with crescere, “to grow.” The d of ad- was assimilated to the following consonant, producing acc-. The same Latin growth root appears in crescent and increase. The word therefore preserves the image of something growing as more material is added to it.
