agronomy はギリシャ語 agros「畑」+ nomos「管理・法」に由来し、文字どおり「畑を治める学」です。agrochemical の agro- や economy の -nomy と響き合い、作物を育てるだけでなく農地全体をどう運営するかの学問だと見えてきます。
Agronomy comes from Greek agros, meaning "field," and nomos, meaning "management" or "law." It is related to agro- words and to the -nomy seen in economy. The word originally suggested the management of fields, then grew into the study of farming and land use.
