覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
allude は通常 allude to+人・出来事・考えの形で、「直接名指しせず、それとなく触れる」と覚えます。はっきり言及する refer to や mention より間接的なのが要点です。ラテン語の「〜へ」と「遊ぶ」に由来し、話題の周辺へ軽く触れる場面を結び付けましょう。
Learn allude together with its usual pattern, allude to something. It describes an indirect reference: a speaker or writer touches on a person, event, or idea without naming it or explaining it openly. Contrast it with mention, which can be direct, and refer to, which is more neutral. Its historical elements convey movement toward something and play, supporting the image of words lightly touching a subject instead of stating it plainly.

allude の語源・成り立ち Etymology
allude はラテン語 alludere にさかのぼり、ad-「〜へ」+ ludere「遊ぶ」から成ります。もとは「軽く触れるように遊ぶ」で、そこから相手に直接言わず意味をそれとなく向ける「ほのめかす」になりました。関連語は illusion, prelude です。
Allude comes through Latin alludere, formed from ad-, meaning “toward,” and ludere, meaning “to play.” In the Latin compound, ad- changed in form before the following consonant. The earlier sense involved playing with or making a playful reference to something, from which the modern idea of indirectly referring or hinting developed. Illusion and prelude also contain forms derived from Latin ludere.
