amethyst の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語の「a-(~ない)」と「methyein(酔う)」に由来し「酔わない石」を意味します。古代人は泥酔を防ぐ護符と信じ、同語根にamethystineがあります。酒を遠ざける霊石の発想が、紫水晶の名前に直結しています。
Amethyst entered English through Old French and Latin from Greek amethystos, literally “not intoxicated.” The Greek word combines the negative prefix a- with a form related to methyein, “to be drunk.” Ancient people believed that the gemstone protected its wearer from drunkenness, and that belief became attached to the name of the purple quartz. The related adjective amethystine means “made of, resembling, or colored like amethyst.”
