The name ultimately comes from Apalachee, the name of an Indigenous people encountered in the sixteenth century by Spanish explorers in what is now the southeastern United States. Over time, the geographical label spread northward along the mountain system, and Appalachia developed as the English name for the broader eastern American region associated with the Appalachian Mountains.
