aspirationはラテン語aspiratioに由来し、ad-「〜へ」+ spirare「息をする」+ -tion から成ります。もとは「息を吹きかける」で、そこから心が前方へ息づくように「熱望」へ広がりました。inspire や spirit に同じ息の語根が見えます。
From Latin aspiratio, from aspirare, made of ad- "toward" and spirare "to breathe." It first referred to breathing or blowing toward something. From that image, it developed into the idea of a strong inner wish reaching forward; compare inspire and spirit, which share the same root.
