aspirantは、ラテン語aspirare「〜へ息を吹きかける・熱望する」に由来し、ad-「〜へ」＋spirare「息をする」から成ります。『心がその方向へ向かう人』というイメージで、aspire や inspire も同じ spir- の語根を持ちます。
Aspirant comes from Latin aspirare, which first meant "to breathe toward" and later came to mean "to long for" or "strive for." It is made from ad- "toward" and spirare "to breathe." From the idea of reaching toward something with strong desire, the word developed into its modern form. Aspire and inspire share the same spir- root.
