The English name Assam comes from the name of the region in northeastern India, and the tea takes its name directly from that place. The deeper origin of the place-name is disputed. It has been connected with the Ahom people, who ruled the region, and has also been associated with Sanskrit asama, interpreted as “unequalled” or “uneven.” Because the historical derivation is uncertain, the secure connection is from the geographical name to the product name.
