stake は古英語 staca「杭」。賭けで金品を「杭のところに差し出す」感覚から at stake は「賭けの上に置かれている」、つまり失う危険にさらされることを表す。関連語は stakeout, attach。
Stake comes from Old English staca, meaning a wooden post or pole. In gambling, money or valuables were placed by a stake or tied to it, so what was risked was literally "at stake." The phrase then broadened to mean anything exposed to possible loss or danger.
