Etymology
Audition comes through French from Latin auditio, “a hearing” or “the act of listening,” formed from audire, “to hear.” English initially used it in senses connected with hearing. It later developed its modern theatrical and musical meaning because judges listen to, and often watch, performers demonstrate their abilities before selecting them for roles or positions.
