覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
原形 audition に -ing をそのまま付けた現在分詞・動名詞で、発音の中心も audition と同じです。audition for a role / part の形で「役を得るため審査を受ける」と覚えます。aud- は audience、audible と同じ「聞く」の系統で、審査員が演技や歌を見聞きする場面につながります。
Start with the base verb audition and add -ing without changing the spelling: audition becomes auditioning. The core scene is a performer presenting acting, singing, dancing, or musical skill so that selectors can decide whether to offer a role. Remember the common pattern auditioning for a role, a part, or a place in a group. The root aud- also appears in audience and audible and is historically connected with hearing, which fits the idea of judges listening to a performer, although modern auditions may evaluate visual performance too.

auditioning の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語audire(聞く)由来で、語根aud-に接尾辞-ition(行為)が付き「聴くこと」を意味します。審査員が応募者の演技や演奏を直接「聞いて」評価する場であるため、試演会を指す語となりました。同根語にaudience(聴衆)やaudible(聞こえる)があります。
Auditioning is the present participle and gerund of audition, formed by adding -ing to the unchanged base word. Audition ultimately derives from Latin audire, “to hear,” through Latin auditio, “a hearing or listening.” The English noun first concerned hearing and later came to mean a trial performance heard or observed by selectors. From that noun, audition developed as a verb meaning to perform for or conduct such a test.
