A backstory is the background information that explains what happened before the main events of a story or situation. It is often used for characters in books, films, and games to show their past and explain their behavior.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
story は知っていても、backstory は「本筋の後ろにある story」として覚えると定着しやすいです。小説・映画・ゲームで character’s backstory とよく言い、登場人物が今そうなっている理由になる過去を指します。background より物語性が強く、history よりも「作品内で明かされる設定・前史」という感じ。plot（現在の展開）とは別に、その前に積まれていた事情を思い浮かべると意味が取りやすいです。
Break it into `back` + `story`: the story behind the main story. It is often used for a character's earlier life that explains the present plot. Compared with `background`, `backstory` feels more connected to narrative and hidden past events.

backstory は back（古英語）+ story（古フランス語 estorie、さらにラテン語 historia）から成る語です。文字どおり「物語の後ろにある話」なので、人物や事件の背景・前史を表します。関連語に history, background があります。
A modern compound of back and story. Story came into English through Old French from Latin historia, while back is from Old English. The literal idea is "the story behind the story," which developed into the meaning of earlier background events.
