小説や映画などで、メインのストーリーとは別に展開される副次的な筋書きのこと。
Subplots are secondary story lines in a book, movie, or play. They develop alongside the main plot and often add extra characters, themes, or conflicts. They help make a story richer and more complex.

plot が「物語の筋」だと分かれば、subplots は「主筋に対して並行して走る脇の筋」と整理できる。映画や海外ドラマで、主人公の本題とは別に、脇役の恋愛・過去・対立が進む場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。main plot とセットで覚えるのがコツで、subplots は単なる脱線ではなく、本筋を補強したり、最後に交差して効いてきたりする複数の小さな筋書き。"multiple subplots" の形も頻出。
If `plot` is the main story line, `subplots` are the smaller lines running beside it. Remember it together with `main plot`, not alone. In films or TV dramas, side romance or a character's past often becomes a subplot.

sub-はラテン語で「下・補助」、plotは古英語や古低地ドイツ語系の「区画・筋立て」にさかのぼります。subplotsは「主筋の下に置かれた小さな筋」で、本筋を支えつつ意味を厚くする話。submarine, substituteのsub-にも同じ「下で支える」感覚が残ります。
Subplots combines `sub-`, meaning "under" or "secondary," with `plot.` `Plot` comes from older Germanic words for a piece of ground, and later it came to mean the plan or structure of a story. From that, `subplot` developed as a smaller story line placed under the main one. The same `sub-` appears in words like `submarine` and `substitute`.
