Memory Tip
You can bank on it. / bank on her support
Think of a bank as a place where you put something valuable for safety. In `bank on`, you place your trust there in the same way. It is close to `count on`, but often sounds a little more confident and dependable.

Etymology
Bank came through Italian banca, meaning a money changer's bench or table, and it goes back to a Germanic word for a bench. In bank on, the idea is to place trust on something as if it were a secure financial support. This developed naturally into the meaning of relying on or expecting something. Related words include bankrupt and banknote.
