barkingとは、犬が吠える行為、またはその音を指す名詞・動詞の現在分詞形。犬が警戒・興奮・要求などを表す際に発する特有の大きな鳴き声を意味する。比喩的に、人が怒鳴ったり命令を大声で発したりする様子を表す際にも使われることがある。

Keep it separate from bark meaning the outer covering of a tree; that is a different word historically.

Its form has long been associated with the abrupt sound of a dog, although an exact imitative origin cannot be proved with certainty. The noun bark meaning a tree’s outer covering developed separately and is not the source of this sense.
