bayonet の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 baionnette が語源で、南仏の地名 Bayonne にちなむとされます。接頭辞分解より地名由来が核で、「その土地の刃物」が武器名になった形です。関連語の Bayonne や Bayonnais を見ると、地名が意味の芯だと分かります。
Bayonet comes from French baionnette, probably named after Bayonne, a town in southwest France known for blades. So the word is mainly place-based, not built from smaller meaning parts. It first meant a weapon associated with that place, then became the general English name for the weapon.
