beadle の語源・成り立ち Etymology

beadle は中英語 bedel、さらに古英語 bydel「触れ役・呼び出し役」に由来し、語根は beodan「告げる・命じる」です。もとは人々を呼び集めて知らせる役だったため、教会で用事を取り仕切る「世話役」の意味になりました。関連語は bid, forbid。

Beadle comes through Middle English bedel from Old English bydel, meaning a messenger, herald, or person who summons others. Bydel is connected with the Old English verb beodan, “to announce, command, or bid.” Because such an officer conveyed instructions and called people together, the title later came to denote a minor official serving a church, university, court, or other institution and helping maintain ceremonial order.
