forbid は古英語 forbeodan にさかのぼり、for-「逆らって・退けて」+ beodan「命じる・告げる」から成る語です。bid や bidding も同根で、もとは「してはならないと前もって言い渡す」感覚だから、禁止の語でも命令の響きが残ります。
Forbid comes from Old English forbeodan. It combines for-, which often gave a strong negative or opposing force, with beodan, meaning "to command" or "announce." The original sense was to order against something in advance, and that developed into the modern idea of prohibition. Bid and bidding come from the same root.
