規則、方針、契約などによって、ある行為や状態を認めないことを表す。単に好ましくないと思うのではなく、正式に許可しない、禁止する、不適切として受け入れないという、やや硬い表現として使われる。

disallow は dis-「否定」+ allow「許す」からなる語で、allow は古フランス語 alouer を経てラテン語 allocare「割り当てる」にさかのぼる。つまり「許可を与えない」で、正式に認めない響きが強い。allowance や allocate も縁がある。
