Remember the spelling through Italian bella, “beautiful,” and donna, “woman,” but connect the English meaning with a poisonous plant. Deadly in its alternative name, deadly nightshade, is a useful memory cue.

belladonna の語源・成り立ち Etymology
イタリア語「bella(美しい)」+「donna(女性)」で「美しい女性」の意。ルネサンス期にイタリアの女性がこの植物の汁を目に差して瞳孔を拡大させ、魅力的に見せたことに由来する。関連語に「belle(美女)」「donna(イタリア語で女性)」がある。
Belladonna was borrowed from Italian bella donna, literally “beautiful woman.” The plant name is traditionally connected with the historical cosmetic use of preparations from the plant to dilate the pupils, although such use was dangerous because the plant is highly toxic. In English, belladonna became established as a botanical and pharmaceutical term for deadly nightshade, Atropa belladonna, and for preparations derived from it.
