A bellwether is something or someone that shows what will probably happen in the future. It is often used in business, politics, and economics for a sign of wider change or a leading example. If something is a bellwether, people watch it closely because it can predict trends.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず bell に目を留めると覚えやすい語です。語源を細かく追わなくても、「群れの先頭で bell を鳴らす存在」→「みんなの進む方向を示すもの」とつなげると、先行指標の感覚が残ります。ニュースや経済では the company is a bellwether for the industry のように、「その業界全体の先行きを映す存在」でよく使われます。weather とつづりが似ていますが無関係なので混同しないこと。人にも指標にも使える語です。
Notice the first part, `bell`. A good memory image is a sheep with a bell at the front of the group, leading the others, so `bellwether` becomes something that shows where others will go. Be careful not to confuse it with `weather` just because the spelling looks similar.

bellwether は bell「鐘」+ wether「去勢した雄羊」で、中英語 bellewether に由来する。先頭の羊に鐘を付けて群れを導かせたことから、「進路を示すもの」の比喩になった。bell や cowbell と同じ語根を含み、市場の先行指標という意味もここから腑に落ちる。
Bellwether comes from bell + wether, with wether meaning a castrated male sheep in Middle English. A sheep that led the flock often wore a bell, so the word first meant that leading animal. From there it became a figurative word for a person or thing that shows the direction others will follow.
