中英語 belongen、be-（強意接頭辞）＋longen（属する・ふさわしい）から。longenは古英語 gelang（依存する）に由来し、long（長い・渇望する）とも関連する。「強く結びついている」が原義で、所属や帰属の意味に発展した。along（沿って）も同根。
