Etymology

The country adopted the name Benin in 1975, replacing Dahomey. The new name was taken from the Bight of Benin, whose name is historically connected with the nearby Kingdom of Benin and the Edo or Bini people. The local name is often associated with a form such as Ubinu. English borrowed the established regional name without productive English prefixes or suffixes, so it is best treated as an indivisible proper name.
