Braille is a system of raised dots that blind or visually impaired people read by touch. It is used in books, signs, labels, and educational materials. The word usually refers to both the writing system itself and text produced in that form.

braille の語源・成り立ち Etymology
braille は19世紀に点字を考案したフランス人ルイ・ブライユ（Louis Braille）の姓から生まれた語です。人名がそのまま一般名詞化した形で、「ブライユ式の文字」から点字を意味するようになり、braillewriter にも同じ名が残ります。
Braille comes from the surname of Louis Braille, the French inventor who created the writing system in the 19th century. His family name became the name of the system itself. Over time, it shifted from meaning "Braille's method" to the general English word braille, seen also in words like braillewriter.
