布や金属の表面を磨いて光沢を出す作業。バフと呼ばれる道具を使う研磨。
Buffing is the process of polishing a surface to make it smoother, shinier, or cleaner. It is commonly used for metal, wood, shoes, cars, and other materials that need a finished surface.

buffing は buff「磨いてつやを出す」+ -ing と見れば覚えやすい。car body を buff する、shoes を buff するのように、表面をこすって光らせる場面で使う語。cutting や grinding が削る・研ぐ工程なら、buffing はその後の仕上げで光沢を出す段階、と工程の順番で覚えると定着しやすい。buffing wheel, buffing compound など、研磨道具と一緒に出やすい。buffer と形が近いが、『磨く作業』を指す点を区別。

buffing は buff + -ing です。buff は中世フランス語 buffle「水牛」に由来し、そこから buff leather「水牛革」、さらにその革で磨くことを指すようになりました。buffer や buffalo と結ぶと、研磨語が革の名から来たと見えてきます。
`Buffing` comes from `buff` plus `-ing`. `Buff` came through French from a word for "buffalo," and first referred to buff leather, a strong leather made from buffalo or similar hide. Because that leather was used for polishing, the word later shifted from the material itself to the act of polishing.
