過食症は、過食の発作をくり返し、その後に体重増加を防ごうとして嘔吐、下剤の乱用、過度な運動などの代償行動を伴うことがある摂食障害です。体重は人によって異なり、必ず正常範囲に保たれるとは限りません。

bulimia はギリシャ語 bous「牛」+ limos「飢え」から成り、文字通りは「牛一頭でも食べられそうな飢え」です。bulimic や bovine が近い根を持ち、単なる大食いでなく制御不能な飢餓感を表す語だと腑に落ちます。
