摂食障害の一種で、食べることを極端に避けてしまい、食欲がほとんどなくなる状態が続く。栄養不足により体重が著しく減り、体力や免疫力が低下してしまう。早期に治療や周囲の理解を得ることが回復への鍵となる。

anorexia の語源・成り立ち Etymology
anorexiaはギリシャ語a(n)-「ない」＋orexis「食欲・欲求」から来て、字義は「食欲がないこと」です。orexisは「手を伸ばして求める」という感覚の語なので、欲求そのものが失われた状態から「拒食症」の意味になりました。関連語はanorexic、orexigenic。
