bunk は18世紀英語で、スコットランド語 bunker「腰掛け・ベンチ」が短くなった形とされます。語源自体はやや不詳ですが、「座る場所」から船や列車の簡易寝台へ意味が伸び、bunk bed にも残ります。関連語は bunker, bunkhouse。
