by は古英語 bī『そばに』、way は古英語 weg『道』で、wagon と同じく『運ぶ・進む』語根にさかのぼります。『本道の脇道で言えば』という比喩から by the way は「ところで」。away や roadway にも道筋の発想が見えます。
