calumet の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語 calumet(葦笛)から。ラテン語 calamus(葦)に遡り、ギリシャ語 kalamos と同根。北米先住民が儀式で用いた喫煙パイプをフランス人入植者がこう呼んだ。関連語: calamari(イカ=筒状)、calligraphy の cal-も同系統。
Calumet entered English from Canadian French calumet. In French colonial usage, the word was applied to ceremonial pipes encountered among Indigenous peoples of North America. The French term had earlier referred to a reed or reedlike tube and is related through regional French forms to Late Latin calamellus, a diminutive of Latin calamus, “reed.” The semantic connection is the hollow, tube-shaped stem, which led the European term to be used for the ceremonial pipe.
