canting には二系統あります。『偽善的に語る』は古フランス語 canter（歌う）→ラテン語 cantare に由来し、空疎な説教口調の連想から出た語です。『傾く』は別系統で、中英語 cant『角・縁』から来ています。関連語は chant。
