capitalisationは名詞で、文法や表記では語頭などを大文字で書くことや、その使い方を指す。金融では企業価値を資本の面から捉える語で、特にmarket capitalisationという形では通常「時価総額」を意味する。
Capitalisation is the use of capital letters in writing, such as for names or at the beginning of sentences. In business or accounting, it can also mean putting money into a company or treating a cost as part of its long-term value. The correct meaning depends on the context.

capitalisation は capital + -isation から成り、capital はラテン語 caput「頭」に由来します。caput から「頭の文字」すなわち「大文字」という発想が生まれ、そこに「〜化」を表す -isation が付いて「大文字化」になりました。関連語は capital, capitulate です。
