cataclysm はギリシャ語 kataklysmos「洪水・押し流すこと」に由来し、kata-「下へ」+ klyzein「洗い流す」から成ります。もとは大洪水のように一気に世界をのみ込む感覚で、そこから社会や自然の「大変動」を表す語になりました。関連語は deluge、cleanse です。
Cataclysm comes from Greek kataklysmos, meaning a flood or washing over, from kata- "down" and a verb meaning "to wash" or "to surge." At first it referred to a great flood. Later it widened to mean any sudden, overwhelming disaster or violent change.
