catfishing は catfish「ナマズ」+ -ing からできた語です。映画 Catfish と同名のテレビ番組を通じて、ネット上で偽の身元を使って人をだます意味が広まりました。もとの catfish は、ひげのある見た目が cat「猫」を連想させる魚名ですが、現代語ではそこから『偽プロフィールで相手を釣る行為』へ意味が移っています。
