chasing は chase に動作名詞の -ing が付いた形です。chase は古フランス語 chacier を経て、俗ラテン語 *captiare、さらにラテン語 capere「つかむ」にさかのぼり、「捕まえようとして追う」感覚から今の意味になりました。capture, catch が関連語です。
